〔未存在的故鄉〕是一系列有關基層與邊界的影片。

資本全球化,不斷唱好跨國的自由流動和聯繫,宣稱自由流動將會帶來發展與機遇,但現實上,所謂的自由流動只是有利資本累積的流動,基層的流動卻總是困難重重、死傷難計。族群矛盾,更因一條條無形、有形的邊界,不斷促成史上大大小小的悲劇,可惜,歷史卻仍在世界各處重演又重演,令人望而心酸。究竟這些現象是怎樣形成的呢?歷史重覆的詛咒有否可能被破解?〔未存在的故鄉〕的三位製作人,嘗試透過自身和家族的歷史,對照各種小人物跨越邊境的歷史,希望從中找到,破解詛咒的線索。

exodus of nowhere is a series of work concerning the relationships between the grassroot people and borders.

capital globalization adores the free global flows and connections, declaring that we are living in a world without borders. however, the so-called “free flow” only belongs to capital agglomeration, the flow is far less easy and free for grassroots. the flow for grassroots always comes along with numerous barriers and casualties. ethnic conflicts have led to infinite tragedy in history. unfortunately, tragedies seem to have repeated themselves, over and over again. can this spell be ever broken? the three people who made this film is trying to find a trace, through looking into small family histories and grand narration of human migration.

〔只隔一江水〕:近年在香港,圍繞著「移動」和「本土」的對立展開了十分劇烈的社會爭議,彷彿兩者只可以是相互排斥的身份。〔只隔一江水〕環繞著近廿年裡首宗掀起爭議的「港人內地所生子女爭取居港權運動」,在九九年人大釋法後的第十四年,以居港權運動的家長和子女穿越邊界的故事,尋問「人」的立足點。

the water is wide: conflicts evolving around “migration” and “locality” have been furious in hong kong recently. it seems that these two can only be to a pair of confrontation. the water is wide tells the story of the very first of these serious conflicts, which is the right of abode issue of children of hong kong citizens who were born in the mainland china before the 1997 handover. at the fourteenth anniversary of national people’s conference interpretation of basic law (concerning the right of abode), we look back at this story and seek for a standing point for a human being.

好多人話,人生是一場賭局。可是,對資訊和資源缺乏,只能單打獨鬥的閒家來說,就唯有見步行步,搵命搏……

經歷韓戰禁運、七三股災的公公;經歷石油危機和兩伊戰爭的水手爸爸;1989年後驚慌逃亡、爭取居英權不果的人們;在貧窮中掙扎,以至離鄉別井,到一些不承認他們貢獻的大城市打工的外傭姐姐和內地農民工;相識於拉美,相戀於異地,相聚於族群衝突小城的一對小情侶……

這些看似毫無關係的小人物,他/她們的經歷,卻能告訴我們同一個故事,關乎族群、流動、邊境、聚合、分隔、責任和壓迫的全球化。在個人,和世界之間,存在的連繫,又是什麼呢?

one might compares life to a gamble. but for isolated players who are lacking in resources and information, every move is a gamble with risk and uncertainty.

the grandfather who lived through embargo (during korean war) and financial crisis (of 1973);the sailor father who witnessed oil crisis and iran-iraq war; the dismayed people who fled amidst a failed campaign to establish residency in the united kingdoms in post-1989 hong kong; the foreign domestic workers and chinese farmers who traveled afar from the impoverished home to cities where their contributions had never been recognised; the couple who met in a foreign country and united in a city overwhelmed by ethnic conflict…

these stories of seemingly unrelated individuals revealed a chapter of globalisation about ethnicities, migration, borders, separation, responsibility and oppression.

from there we asked: what are the connections between us as individuals and the world? this, we left it to you to join us for its quest in the movie.

[我們],就是族群政治的基礎。[我們]是每一次以族群/身份政治為手段的暴政計劃之基礎。[我們],又是我們安身立命之所。[我們]其實是一個無法輕易劃界的虛詞,一個未存在的地方。

一堆長達三百年,跨越歐亞地區,關於小人物們希望與失落、壓迫與反抗、冷漠與熱情的故事。在各種權力的擠壓之下,任何一個[我]的命運和自我意識,都處於斷裂與連續、知與未知、移與住之間,不停往返。又有誰可以全知視角觀之述之?唯有回歸真誠,以越界敘述越界;用斷裂表現斷裂。

影片透過[迴旋]、[變奏]、[間奏]組成一系列非線性、虛實相間的敘事,以評述式紀錄片的形式來成就一齣非評述式紀錄片。每章每節都有其獨立性,但亦互相指涉,展現一系列移民、邊境、貧富懸殊、殖民、性別政治、資本全球化與族群政治之間千絲萬縷的故事網絡。

“we" makes the base of ethnic politics. “we" is the base of tyranny which makes use of ethnic and identity politics. meanwhile, “we" is also where we place ourselves and carry out pursuits. actually, “we" has always been a hardly definable word, somewhere not yet existed.

stories about the multitudes’ hope and disappointment, oppression and resistance, indifference and enthusiasm, happened across the eurasian continent in the past three hundred years. under various sorts of oppressions, the fate and self-consciousness of any “i" are forced to roll between fragmentation and continuity, between certainty and uncertainty, and between migration and settlement . rondo as “i” is in, who can tell their stories from a omniscient viewpoint? only shall we return sincerity, to narrate line-cross by crossing lines, to depict fragmentation by fragmentization.

the film is a series of non-linear and (dis)illusory narratives composed by “rondo", “variation" and “intermezzo". by using a commentary style, this film tries to actualize a non-commentary documentary. each chapter could be viewed independently while intertwining with each other, revealing a narrative network constituted by migration, border-crossing, wealth disparity , colonization, gender politics, capitalistic globalization and ethnic politics.
