why must people need democracy? perhaps it is because people with different identities and status will have different interests, so democracy can ensure the whole society will not only serve a particular interest group, but also the underprivileged, marginalized and people who lacks resources, letting us decide on our own as well as collective issues. yet, what is democracy? if democracy merely means universal suffrage, representative democracy and majority rule, somebody will inevitably be marginalized. is this really democracy?
democracy must therefore require an absolute consensus of the unanimity of the whole society, so as to protect the opinions and rights of the most underprivileged and marginalized. in other words, democracy means everyone has the opportunities to actively participate, express ourselves and make decisions collectively. if anyone becomes passive and entrusts others to decide on everything for him/her in this process, the so-called “consensus” will not be able to reflect the opinions of all members. However, “autonomy and self-determination” might turn easily into “self-centre”, which deems own (personal) interests and opinions come first and ignores others. as a result, it will never reach a true democratic consensus.
hence, people need to have in-depth communication, build up mutual understanding and trust over a long time span, and we also need to consider others’ situation while thinking of our own opinions and interests. Here “others” are neither limited to the people living within the same place, countries or territories, nor of whom are similar to us. more crucially, we should also think of “others” who live far away from us, or whom are of much differences between us. By establishing the communication and connection with people all over the globe, it prevents the democratic decision-making from hurting others in any direct/ indirect or intended/ unintended ways.
