觀映線索 clue of viewing|「我們」"us"

there is not only “me” in the world, nor merely “you,” “her,” “him.”
there are also “us,” “you” (in plural form), and “them.”

simply speaking, there are two kinds of “us.” on the one hand is the “us” which is perceived as having far older existence than “me”; to which the subordination of “me” is took-for-granted and incapable of individual decision. this “us,” such as nationality and gender, contains certain memories and cultural habits, yet simultaneously determines distribution of power and resource. on the other hand is the “us,” like various organizations and groups, of which the reason of emergence is perceived as the existence of “me”– “me” who have something want to accomplish but cannot do so merely by individual effort, who thus want to aggregate with other “me” to get things done.

perhaps “us” is omnipresent. yet sometimes it seems absent. and if people pay more attention to recognize, observe, examine, and imagine various types of “us,” it might be…

a malaysian citizen said:
“during 1930s and 1940s, not so much people would describe themselves as ‘malay.’ they would only say ‘i am johorean,’ ‘i am malaccan.’”
when did “malay” emerge?
who invented it and for whom?

a farmer said:
“i left an organic farming association because i recognized that i can’t do it inside…”
what did (s)he want to do?
how did the organic farming association render her/him failure to do so?

an indonesian agricultural worker said:
“english is more understandable to the colonists, but to me javanese is more understandable, since i am not thinking in terms of english.”
what does it mean if we use a language more understandable to us when thinking?
what does it mean if we use a language more understandable to others when thinking?
